Angela offers support, therapeutic and implications counselling to couples and individuals exploring their fertility and considering assisted conception or fertility preservation and people experiencing infertility, secondary infertility and people who are involuntarily childless. She holds a Master’s degree in Psychoanalytical studies and is a registered member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and an Accredited member of BICA.  She is also a qualified Supervisor. Currently she is a Trainer with the BICA Training Group providing training to other fertility counsellors to improve and promote high standards of fertility counselling and is Deputy Chair of the BICA Accreditation Board.

Angela has co-authored BICA Guidelines for Good Practice in Fertility Counselling 4th Ed. 2019. Angela’s interests include all aspects of assisted conception, donation treatment, surrogacy and gender dysphoria and supporting patients before, during and after their treatment. Life brings many challenges, and I believe that counselling offers a safe space to think and reflect in times of crisis and decision making.

I am an integrative Psychotherapist and Counsellor, which simply means that I have studied multiple theories, drawing on Psychodynamic, Systemic and Narrative Therapy, and where relevant using CBT ( Cognitive Behaviour Therapy). I qualified with a BSc in Psychology and initially trained with the Relate UA Diploma Couple Counselling course, working with individuals and couples for a number of years. I am a Chartered Clinical Psychologist and Director of Cheshire Psychological Therapy. I am an experienced Clinical Psychologist and have worked for 20 years in both private practice and within NHS teams. I am based in Chester and can offer face to face appointments in a safe and private environment but can also offer therapeutic support remotely. I am able to offer specialist therapeutic help and support to couples who are experiencing difficulties in conceiving, women or men who are experiencing difficulties during pregnancy, or as a result of childbirth, or in the early years of a child’s life.

I am a specialist in the Psychological factors involved in maternal and infant mental health, gender development and reproductive growth and development, infertility, Assisted Reproductive Technology (AIT) and In Vitro Fertilization (IVF), pregnancy, miscarriage and abortion, donor conception and surrogacy, labour and delivery and the postnatal period.

I also have an interest in working with Women who are experiencing specific reproductive lifespan events such as the psychological impact of menarche, the menstrual cycle, endometriosis and fibroids, premenstrual syndromes, Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD), Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) and Premenstrual Tension (PMT), the Perimenopause, The Menopause and Premature Ovarian Failure and Hysterectomy.

I have previously set up and managed a specialist Perinatal Mental Health Service in the NHS and maintain a special interest and up to date experience and knowledge in this field, and link into other local services in Cheshire and North Wales. I am able to offer bespoke packages of therapeutic care to individuals, couples and parents on a flexible and private basis.

I offer a free 10 minute phone consultation to all enquires which is an opportunity for me to check that I would be the best person to help you and to make suggestions for other professionals who may be able to offer what you are looking for if I am not. This phone call also gives you the chance to see whether you feel comfortable speaking to me. Appointments are charged privately at £130 for an initial assessment appointment (90 minutes), and following this £95 per therapy session (50 minutes). I can offer a 10% reduction in fees to Paths to Parent-Hub enquires for up to an including the first 5 sessions. Fees include costs for brief letters to referrers, and brief text, phone or email contact in between sessions as necessary. There will be a charge for longer assessment reports or letters on request. I am registered with all of the main private health insurance providers including AXA, Bupa, Aviva, WPA, Cigna and Vitality Health. I have worked with fertility issues for ten years and have been employed by Glasgow Royal infirmary as a fertility counsellor for over four years. Sandra Lawrence is an experienced face to face counsellor for over 30 years in the NHS.  She has also been working virtually by Skype and telephone for over 15 years . Most of her work has been in Women’s Health Counselling and independent general counselling. She is a qualified nurse and midwife and a PGCE trained teacher.  She was trained at The University of Hertfordshire in client centred and psychodynamic models of counselling, winning the University’s prize for high standard of care in Pregnancy Related stress in Women’s Health Care. She achieved her Masters in Clinical Science in Psychotherapy at the University of Kent in Canterbury. She also did some Relate and CBT training and integrates her models with her healthcare experience to help her clients.

Sandra now mainly works virtually. She is registered with the Information Commissioning Office (ICO) . She provides Implications counselling and support counselling for Infertility patients, in line with HFEA regulations. Sandra has experience working on site in regulated infertility treatment centre as well as working off site with patients from treatment centres . She has experience working with donor conception and other forms of infertility care. She sees men and women, couples and individuals and is non gender specific in her counselling work. She takes a keen interest in donor conception to help families build happy fulfilling lives.

I have a unique background as a therapist having studied as a pure clinical scientist in reproductive immunology. After graduation, I trained as a clinical embryologist with Lord Professor Robert Winston at Hammersmith Hospital before continuing my embryological professional development at Guys and St Thomas’s. I have a particular interest in fertility and in grief and loss. I have experience in a London fertility clinic, supporting individuals, same-sex couples and heterosexual couples with their treatment, and with all the emotions that fertility issues can stir up. I am comfortable and experienced in exploring the implications of donor conception (sperm donation/ egg donation/ double donation) with people considering building their family this way, and I also work with people considering surrogacy.

I believe finding support, connection and community can make a real difference when navigating issues around fertility -it can be a real rollercoaster of emotions, so it’s important to practice self-care and let selected others support you too.

Caroline is passionate about working with those experiencing infertility and social infertility offering support, therapeutic and implications counselling. She works with those undergoing fertility preservation, general IVF and other fertility treatments, and has a particular interest in working with those who are thinking about creating families through donation and surrogacy.   She recognises the unique circumstances and complex emotions involved in creating and raising a family this way having personal experience of donation.  

Caroline is on the Executive Committee for the British Infertility Counselling Association.  She is also a former trustee of the Donor Conception Network and remains involved in the Charity now as a facilitator.  Caroline has spoken nationally and internationally on infertility and donor conception, and has conducted and presented her own research on the thoughts and feelings that accompany childlessness/ donor conception at events such as the Fertility Show, Fertility Fest and ESHRE.

Caroline has an MSc in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, having studied the two major CBT approaches (Rational Emotive Behavioural Therapy (REBT) and Cognitive Therapy CT), to Masters level. Caroline’s background includes over 15 years working in global healthcare and pharmaceutical communication, having originally started her career as a nurse.

I retrained as a therapist in 1996 and worked initially as a voluntary counsellor for CRUSE Bereavement Care, eventually working for many years as a counsellor in GP Practice.  In 1999, alongside my GP work, I became fertility counsellor for the Hull IVF Unit and I continue to provide counselling and support for the Unit. I opened my own practice in 2002. I completed my doctorate in counselling in 2006 and my research focused on infertility and how clients made sense of their lives after treatment failed.  I have taught for several years in the Dept. of Psychology at the University of Hull, teaching counselling and coaching. Currently, alongside my practice as a specialist fertility counsellor, I am employed on a part-time basis by the BACP as an Accreditation Assessor. I provide consultative supervision for CRUSE supervisors and sit on the BICA Board of Accreditation. The uncertainties surrounding infertility and treatment outcomes can be very distressing and have a significant impact on a woman’s emotional wellbeing. It can put a strain on relationships, not only with a partner, but also with others who may not fully understand what it is like to have fertility issues and leave women feeling isolated and alone. For women of colour from black, Asian and other minoritised backgrounds, this can be even more difficult due to the silence in some communities about infertility and cultural beliefs surrounding children and family.

You may have also discovered that you need to think of alternative ways to create your family – through the donation of sperm, eggs or embryos. Surrogacy or adoption may also have been suggested. The loss of having a child that is genetically related to you or your partner or not being able to give birth to your child can be an enormous loss.

I offer women a safe and confidential space to explore all the difficulties that they are experiencing whilst going through this emotional and uncertain time in their lives.

My name is Vicky and I am a specialist infertility counsellor. I have training as a general counsellor and I am a member of the BACP. I hold an enhanced DBS check. After completing my training I have also undertaken additional learning to specialise in infertility and I am an accredited member of BICA (British Infertility Counselling Association), I am also on the BICA executive committee.  I think counselling can be seen as a scary word – some people I think feel it implies they can’t cope – this couldn’t be further from the truth. I much prefer to think of it as support at a very difficult time, my own personal journey taught me just how helpful this type of help can be.

If you are using or donating gametes (e.g. donor sperm, eggs or embryos) these feeling can be exasperated and it’s likely you will need a safe space in which to explore what treatment will involve, your feelings around this and the lasting implications for you and those close to you.  Additionally your clinic may require an implications counselling session be carried out prior to your treatment. I offer Implications counselling sessions including a full report to your clinic at a time to suit you via telephone, Skype or Zoom.

Infertility can affect all your relationships – including the relationship with you partner, with relatives, friends and even colleagues at work. Additionally your self-esteem and sexual relationships may take a battering. Counselling is vital, it gives you a confidential safe space and some support during what may be a very difficult time. Furthermore infertility counselling can often be a great stress reliever, which, of course, can only help during a treatment cycle. It can be quite practical, we can look at strategies that can be put in place to cope with a treatment cycle, things that will make it more manageable, including making a plan for the infamous two week wait.

Counselling can be a way of acknowledging what a difficult journey you are undertaking and can be a way of getting the support that is right for you. I realise when you are having treatment time is often of the essence and with this in mind I offer Skype, Zoom and telephone sessions. I feel this makes counselling much more accessible and flexible, I offer early morning and evening sessions. I am Dr Miriam Inder, Perinatal Clinical Psychologist, providing specialist psychological therapy for people who have experienced reproductive trauma. You shouldn’t have to struggle alone with grief and trauma after experiences like difficulty conceiving, invasive tests and diagnoses, fertility treatments, donor-assisted conception or miscarriage. I provide specialist psychological therapy, creating a safe space for you to make sense of your experiences, process what has happened and shape your journey ahead.

About me

I’ve been a fertility counsellor since 1996 and, as such, have a wide range of expertise in all aspects of this area.

In addition, I specialise in miscarriage counselling.

A major part of my work involves counselling those who are trying to conceive a baby using donated eggs, donated sperm and, occasionally, donated embryos and so I have a wealth of experience in this field.

I’m also a specialist counsellor for the Donor Conception Network.

How I work

Although based in Bristol, I’m still currently working virtually – by Zoom, Facetime, Skype and phone.

Many of the people I see use my service as an emotional resource and contact me as and when they need support. As such, I do not give any recommendation for the number, frequency or regularity of sessions but rather try to work around the needs of each individual or couple I see.

I can be very flexible and will always try to work with you around your availability. I offer daytime appointments, some evening appointments and Saturday morning appointments.

Fees

My normal fee is £60 per individual session and £70 for a couples session but I offer a discount for ‘Paths to Parenthub’ members of £50 and £60 respectively. Please quote this in your initial enquiry.

Why ongoing support is helpful for those going down a path to parenthood using a donor:

Having to accept that you may never have a genetic baby of your own is a massive loss that cannot be underestimated. The grieving process involved in coming to accept this can take a considerable time and so ongoing support may be needed while you adjust to the news.

The implications of having a child that is not made from your genetic material are complex and wide-ranging. Having time to think about what it all means to you as you explore any fears, worries and concerns, can assist you in feeling more and more comfortable about having a family in this unconventional way
