Talking to your child about donor conception: Adapting as they grow

Monday 22nd February 2021 – 8pm (GMT)

I chatted to three incredible speakers all about talking to our children about their conception and how this can adapt as they grow. Following on from our session exploring these conversations in the younger years, we explored how these might develop as our children grow older.

All three of my speakers are parents through donor conception with children in their teens and so not only did they share insights based around their roles in supporting other families, but also share their personal experiences too.

Caroline Spencer is a fertility counsellor and cognitive behavioural psychotherapist, she’s passionate about supporting those who create families through donation having experienced this route to parenthood herself.

Danny Charles is currently co-parenting his sons with his ex-wife. He discovered he was infertile about 30 years ago and, through many ups and downs, he now has 2 boys aged 16 & 18 through donated sperm. They have always known they were conceived that way, one of them is open to finding half siblings and maybe his donor, the other is not. However, both were born before the ending of anonymity and, therefore, may never know.

Finally Vince is Dad to three sperm-donor conceived children ages 15, 13, and 10. Vince is regularly quoted in the media on his experiences as an infertile man, with support groups for infertility, and with donor conception. Vince serves as Chair of Donor Conception Canada which organizes peer-led support groups to help donor conception families process grief, embrace openness, prepare for disclosure, and parent through donor-related issues.
